How to grow tomato seedlings yourself
Tomato variety “President” is recommended for all regions, but in the north it should be grown in greenhouses, and in the south of the country its seeds can be sown in the ground. However, due to the long fruiting period, a seedling method of growing is preferable.
Did you know? Now more than 10 thousand are withdrawn. varieties of tomatoes. The smallest fruits of varietal tomatoes reach 2 cm, and in the most large-fruited varieties they reach a weight of 1.5 kg. A wild species of tomato grows in South America whose tomatoes weigh only about 1 g.
Optimal timing
Early ripe tomatoes are sown at a time that depends on the region and growing conditions. In central Russia, they are sown at the end of March, but if tomatoes are planted in a greenhouse, then you can sow earlier. Tomato seedlings of the “President” variety are planted on a permanent place at the age of 50–55 days from the appearance of seedlings.
Soil mix
It is worth taking care of preparing the soil for seedlings. You can buy it, or you can prepare the following mixture - mix garden soil with peat (humus) and sand in a ratio of 1: 1: 1. A half-liter can of ash and 20 g of superphosphate can be added to the prepared soil mixture. The finished mixture must be disinfected. You can use the following methods:
- pour boiling water or a solution of potassium permanganate;
- calcine in the oven at +80 ... + 90 ° С;
- treat with 3% solution of copper sulfate.
Did you know? Tomatoes, like all ground vegetables, should be sown when the moon grows. The most favorable days are the hours when this Earth satellite is in the constellations of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces.
Capacity for growing
Seedling containers can be any of your choice:
- Boxes. Their advantage is the possibility of reusable use and ease of transportation. It is important that the plants in them do not outgrow and are not closely interwoven with the roots. Carefully remove plants from them.
- Plastic cassettes. They require a pallet search and are poorly transported.
- Plastic cups. Easy to use and inexpensive, but not easy to transport. Often replaced with homemade plastic bottles. They need to make drainage holes themselves.
- Peat cups and pills. Additionally they nourish the plants, but are more expensive and require more frequent hydration.
- Seedling pots. Refillable packaging optimally suitable for seedlings. Tomatoes need pots 12-17 cm deep and of the same width. Their minus is that they take up a lot of space, are difficult to transport, and plants must be removed from them with care.
Seed preparation
Seed material before disembarkation into the soil is recommended to be disinfected by placing it in a light pink solution of potassium permanganate for 20 minutes. Then it should be washed well. To ensure seed germination, they must be sprouted before sowing.
Did you know? One of the most effective methods of disinfection is considered to be the immersion of seeds for half an hour in a thermos with water heated to +50 ° C. It kills bacterial, fungal and viral infections. At the same time, the seeds are wrapped in a gauze bag, and after the procedure they are washed in cold water.
To do this, they are distributed on wet gauze and covered with it on top. At the same time, they withstand temperatures of about +22 ... + 30 ° С. Every day, the seeds are checked for germination and monitor the moisture of the tissue. Usually they appear in the next few days. To improve seed germination, soaking can add stimulants (for example, "Epin").
Sowing seeds
Seeds are sown immediately in separate pots or in one seedling tank, followed by picking in the phase of 2-3 leaves. The soil before sowing is moistened. Grooves are made with a depth of about 1 cm and row spacings of 4 cm. The seeds are located in them at a distance of 2 cm from each other, then they are covered and slightly compacted from above with soil.When sowing a seed in a separate container, it can be deepened by 1 cm in the center of the pot with a pencil. After sowing, the soil is sprayed on top with water, and the container itself is covered with a film and put in a warm place (+25 ° C). Every day the film is opened, checked for moisture and ventilated for 20 minutes.
Seedling Care
When sprouts appear, containers with tomato sprouts are transferred to an illuminated place with a lower temperature of +15 ... + 18 ° С. Tomatoes are photophilous cultures and it is best for them to choose the most lighted window (south, east, west). Otherwise, you have to illuminate this culture with a fluorescent lamp until 12 noon, placing it on top of plants.It is necessary to water the seedlings during the day with standing warm water at +25 ... + 28 ° С. Gentle sprouts are not first watered, but sprayed, not allowing the soil to dry out, or the soil is moistened with a syringe. Starting from the age of two weeks, tomato seedlings can be fed with superphosphate or complex fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium. Before planting in the ground, such top dressing is done 2 more times.
Seedling hardening
A few weeks before planting, seedlings begin to harden. This is done in warm weather, taking containers with tomatoes to the balcony. First, tomatoes spend a little time there (30 minutes). Then the terms are gradually increased and on the last day the plants are already on the street for a whole day. At the same time, the balcony window opens, and the seedlings gradually get used to the sun's rays. If there is no balcony, then a window can be opened for hardening. Drafts should be absent.
Important! Initially, when placing seedlings on the balcony, direct sunlight should be avoided, since ultraviolet light, which did not enter through the glass of the windows, can burn plants.
Planting seedlings in a permanent place
Tomato varieties President planted in open ground, after 50 days from the emergence of seedlings. The threat of frost should pass and the average daily temperature should be +12 ... + 15 ° С. If there is a possibility of a sharp drop in temperatures, it is recommended to plant tomato seedlings in the tunnels and cover them with a special film.For landing it is better to choose a quiet, calm day. In places with unfavorable phytophthora conditions (greenhouse, rainy terrain), soil should be treated with a solution of copper sulfate a day before planting. The beds themselves for planting are prepared and fertilized with organic fertilizers since the fall.
They are dug up with manure, humus or peat. During planting, a little ash can be added to the wells. Landing is carried out according to the scheme for indeterminate crops. The distance between the rows should be 0.7–1 m, and between the bushes - 0.5–0.7 m. In the greenhouse, it is optimal to plant them in a checkerboard pattern with row spacing of 0.7–0.8 m and a distance between plants of 0, 6 m
How to care in the open ground
After planting seedlings in the soil behind the bushes, thorough care should be continued.
Watering
When caring for tomato "President" varieties, it is necessary to carry out regular watering, since the plant receives all the necessary elements for the development and growth of the bush along with water. In dry weather, watering is done every 2-3 days, and in case of heavy rains it is stopped. For irrigation, it is advisable to use non-cold, settled water with a salt content of 3-5 ms / cm.Watering itself is carried out under the root, so that the leaves remain dry, otherwise they may get burned. It is good to use a drip type irrigation system. Watering is recommended in the morning or evening. Tomatoes are especially in need of watering during the period of fruit growth. Lack of moisture during this period will sharply reduce productivity.
Top dressing
To obtain a high yield, President tomatoes should be fertilized regularly. Gardeners recommend feeding as follows:
- The first fertilizer application is carried out 21 days after planting in the ground. The following mineral fertilizers are well suited - 1 tbsp. Fertilizer spoon "Ideal", 1 tbsp. a spoon of nitrophoska is diluted in 10 liters of liquid. For one plant, 0.5 l of such a solution is enough.
- The second top dressing is carried out during the flowering period, when the second brush of the bush begins to bloom. Recommend the following composition - 1 tbsp. spoon "Agricola Vegeta", superphosphate, sulfate (or chloride) potassium diluted in 10 liters of water.
- The third top dressing is done when the third brush blooms. You can take the following composition - 1 tbsp. tablespoons of "Humate of sodium" (you can take the "Ideal"), nitrophoski per 10 liters of liquid. For 1 m², 5 l of such a solution is sufficient.
- The fourth top dressing is carried out 14 days after the third. For this, the following solution is recommended - 1 tbsp. spoon of superphosphate in 10 liters of water. For 1 m², 1 liter of such a solution is sufficient.
Tomatoes love the alternation of mineral and organic fertilizers. As an organic top dressing, rotted mullein and bird droppings are perfect.Be sure to carry out foliar top dressing in the form of spraying bushes. A solution of wood ash is well suited for this purpose. It not only nourishes tomatoes, but also protects against the appearance of various diseases. Such spraying is recommended to be carried out every 14 days.
Did you know? The beneficial properties of tomatoes during heat treatment only improve.
Stepson
A tomato bush of this variety should be stepson and not allow outgrowth of processes. Their length should not be more than 3 cm. Bushes should be formed in 1-2 stems. For formation in 1 stalk, all lateral processes (stepsons) are cut off, leaving 5-6 brushes on the main shoot. It is necessary to pinch off the top of the uppermost brush, leaving 2-3 leaves on it.
When forming in 2 stems, all stepsons are cut off from the main stalk except for one, which is located under the first brush. 4 brushes remain on the main stem, and 3 brushes on the other stem. The top is also pinched off.

Soil care
After each watering, the bushes are recommended to be loosened so that the earth breathes, and there is a constant flow of air to the roots of the plant. During cultivation, weeds and weeds are simultaneously removed, which pull nutrients from the soil onto themselves and prevent tomato bushes from developing. It is advisable to cultivate the bush when loosening the soil. The soil around the tomato bushes is recommended to mulch in order to protect the soil from drying out, as well as from the appearance of fungal diseases.
For mulching use:
- peat;
- straw;
- sawdust.
Bush tying
Despite the fact that the President’s tomato is quite strong, the bush must be tied up, as it can reach 1.5–2 m in height. Under the weight of the fruit, the branches break and need to be strengthened. Moreover, a garter is necessary to protect the plant from strong gusts of wind. This procedure will also simplify the care of the tomato - watering, loosening, spraying, fertilizing.Wooden pegs as a support are well suited for garter. If the plot with tomatoes is large enough, then it is better to use trellises. To do this, at the beginning and at the end of a row of tomatoes, supports are driven in, between which a wire is pulled. Tomatoes are tied to it. If the bed is long, then it is necessary to install intermediate supports for stability.
Important! When gartering tomatoes, do not over tighten the rope - this can damage the plant. Garter material is recommended to use soft and synthetic.
Preventative treatment
Tomato "President" may be susceptible to certain diseases and insects. Therefore, it will be useful to take some preventive measures.
It is necessary to observe the rules of crop rotation - do not plant tomatoes where they used to grow:
- Tomatoes
- potatoes;
- eggplant;
- peppers.
Make sure that there is no thickening of the plantings, loosen and mulch the soil, remove weeds, monitor proper watering.Gardeners recommend the following treatments for tomatoes in order to prevent diseases and pests:
- Spray seedlings before planting in the ground or immediately after planting with a 0.5% Bordeaux liquid mixture. After 14 days, repeat the process, but use a 1% solution. If necessary, subsequent spraying is repeated every 10-12 days until the ripening of the tomatoes. Harvesting can be done 8 days after such spraying.
- The soil for disinfection is sprinkled with wood ash or water is infused with infusion of ash. It is made in this way - a glass of ash is boiled for 10 minutes in 1 liter of water, filtered and dissolved in 10 liters of water.
- To scare insects and prevent certain diseases, you can use a garlic solution. It is prepared as follows: arrows, stems and garlic itself are crushed and 1.5–2 cups of the resulting mixture are diluted with a bucket of water. 1 g of potassium permanganate is also added to the solution. All mix and immediately spray the plants.
If, despite prophylaxis, a disease has been identified, appropriate chemical preparations such as "Profit", "Kartotsid" are used. Tomato varieties "President" is suitable for all regions and is grown both by simple gardeners and on an industrial scale. This high-yielding hybrid requires routine maintenance of the indeterminate type of tomato.
