Over the past weekend, garden strawberries in the country's markets have become cheaper by another 5%.
Today, wholesale markets offer it at a price that is 50% less than in mid-April 2018. So far, all the strawberries on sale are imported products.
Market operators explain the drop in the cost of berries by increasing the supply of cheap strawberries from the European Union. They say that lower prices have a positive effect on consumer interest. Berry sales volumes have increased significantly compared to last year.According to Info-Shuvar analysts, today in the Vegetables and Fruits segment of the largest wholesale market in the West of Ukraine, ORU “Shuvar”, imported berry is sold at 80-90 UAH / kg (2.64-2.98 EUR / kg) while last week its cost was in the range of 80-100 UAH / kg (2.64-3.31 EUR / kg). Since the first days of April, the cost of strawberries in the Ukrainian market has decreased by almost one and a half times.
In 2018, the situation on the strawberry market was completely different. Despite the early opening of the sales season and a good berry harvest, in the middle of April 2018 they asked for 160-170 UAH / kg (5.01-5.32 EUR / kg) for strawberries. At that time, the fall in prices began only with the entry into the market of locally grown strawberries. But the prices reached 80-90 UAH / kg (2.5-2.8 EUR / kg) only in the first week of May, when the Ukrainian berry almost completely pushed the foreign product out of the market.
