This opinion was voiced at the Sugar World 2019 International Congress.
Over the past 5 years, foreign deliveries of sweet product from the European Union have fluctuated between 1.4 - 3.6 million tons. Peak deliveries - 3.55 million tons - were recorded in the 2017-2018 marketing year, but this is due to the abolition of quotas for national production in the fall of 2017. But further, the level of export sales of sugar did not rise above 2 million tons.
The main importers of European sugar are the Eastern Mediterranean region, the countries of North Africa, as well as the Middle East.
At the Congress, a forecast was voiced about a decrease of 5.5% this year in the sown area of sugar beets. The reason for this is more favorable prices for other crops, in particular wheat.
In addition, the prohibition of the use of neonicotinoids adversely affected sugar beet yields in European countries. Manufacturers have to bear additional costs for the purchase and use of plant protection products, which will undoubtedly entail an increase in the cost of the product.
Despite the favorable weather forecast, experts expect the production of a sweet product in the European Union in the 2019-2020 marketing year at the mark of last year.
