The frosts observed at night last week damaged the flowers of apricots and cherries, which does not give hope for their generous harvest this year, Tatyana Adamenko, head of the agrometeorology department of the Ukrhydromettsentr, shared the information.
Frosts were observed throughout the country, and not only in the southern regions of Ukraine. In the rest of the country, frost was recorded on the ground at a height of 2 cm, says Tatyana Adamenko.
According to the expert, such frosts will absolutely not affect the seedlings of early spring crops. But the early crops sown back in March could suffer. These include potatoes. As previously reported, its shoots were frozen in the Zaporozhye region. So far, experts have no data on frost damage to fruit trees, but if we take into account the intensity of cooling and frost resistance of plants, then we can say that there are local damage to flowers and fruit ovaries. This primarily concerns cherries and apricots, which bloomed early this year, T. Adamenko said.
Adamenko added that damage to the ovaries and flowers will lead to a reduction in the yield of cherries and apricots. The remaining fruit trees are not damaged, as they have not yet begun to bloom.
