Last weekend, the market experienced another jump in onion prices.
The last wave of appreciation reached a level of 20-25 UAH / kg (€ 0.66-0.83 / kg). Today, locally grown onions are sold at wholesale prices in the country at a price of 22-25 UAH / kg (€ 0.73-0.83 / kg).
At the same time, products from Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are slightly cheaper - 20-22 UAH / kg (€ 0.66-0.73 / kg). The increase in onion prices is associated with a significant reduction in imports, which Ukraine tried to compensate for the lack of its own product since November 2018.
Recall that 2018 turned out to be barren for onions. It was collected a little, and the resulting product was not of the highest quality. The reduction in purchases of foreign onions is also reflected in the data of the State Statistics Service: in March of this year, Ukraine imported 11.8 thousand tons of onions. Compared with February, the volume of product purchases increased by more than 2 times.
As the sellers of the Shuvar ORSP say, today's demand for onions far exceeds supply. Buyers are not even scared off by unprecedentedly high prices. This week, prices on the Ukrainian market for the first time since the start of the season exceeded the price level in Poland, where this year their rapid growth is also observed.
