On the territory of the island of Maui, which is part of the Hawaiian archipelago, where it is the second largest, in the near future will begin mass cultivation of potatoes.
It should be noted that the industrial cultivation of this culture is an unprecedented case for Maui farmers who previously cultivated mainly sugarcane or simply did not cultivate vast areas of land.
However, enthusiasts from the company Mahi Pono LLC bought forty-one thousand acres of land from the state in the center of the island, requiring land reclamation, and decided to grow white, yellow and red potatoes here.
It should be noted that once upon a time sugar cane grew on these lands for one hundred and forty-six years, but soon potatoes unusual for the islanders will take root.
For starters, in test mode, potatoes will grow on forty acres. Tubers for planting were specially selected by specialists from the "potato Mecca" of the United States - Idaho.
It is noteworthy that seven hundred acres of land are already being leased to Maui farmers for the cultivation of sweet potato (sweet potato). In addition, the island plans to grow commercially coffee, nuts, citrus fruits and bananas.
