Persimmon breeder-varietal tester lives in the village of Kholmovets, Transcarpathian region. At the experimental site, he is engaged in the cultivation of more than a hundred varieties of persimmons adapted to Ukrainian climatic conditions.
In the breeder’s collection there is a variety that can withstand frost up to -40 ° С. When the enthusiast founded his business, in Transcarpathia they did not know anything about persimmons, now he gives advice to neighbors and distributes seedlings of his own selection throughout the country.
Michael is fond of persimmon breeding for more than 30 years. For this work, he wrote out varieties from abroad, entered into cooperation with foreign and Ukrainian institutes. The first persimmon seedlings from an enthusiast died due to frost and he already wanted to abandon the case, but he met Valery Platonovich Chernyaev, who had been engaged in growing persimmons for 53 years.
He sent seedlings to Mikhail, among which was the American frost-resistant variety Meader. Since then, for 24 years, Mikhail Zeldi has been breeding, selling seedlings and fruits.
The gardener sells persimmon fruits at a market price, seedlings cost 450 UAH, but there are cheaper ones. Michael notes the purchase of each young tree with detailed instructions, wanting to make persimmon popular throughout Ukraine.
According to Mikhail Zeldy, persimmon lives a long time. Persimmon trees, which are already five hundred years old, grow in China.
