The imprisoned Russians who are serving time in the Penza penal colony No. 1 this year intend to collect about two hundred kilograms of such an appetizing and nutritious culture as zucchini from the garden plot entrusted to them.
It will not be superfluous to note that in 2019, convicts from the Penza correctional institution grow squash plantations for the first time in the history of the colony.
According to Denis Yezhov, deputy head of the IK, the choice of prisoners and the colony administration fell on zucchini. The fact is that this culture is unpretentious in cultivation and can grow on soils of almost any type. Growing zucchini cannot be called costly, and a short growing season and a potentially high yield from a small area of crops makes this vegetable ideal for cultivation in a colony. The administration of the colony shared that in addition to zucchini, prisoners are also engaged in the cultivation of cucumbers. This season, convicts involved in work in the garden hope to get a cucumber crop of at least a hundred kilograms.
Also on the beds at the colony you can find tomatoes and spicy crops for the production of seasonings. Note that a year earlier, convicts were able to get about 250 kilograms of fresh vegetables from their garden.
They all went to the table with prisoners serving their sentences, and were also sold at an affordable price to correctional staff.
